THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES
> Final Deadline: All entries must be postmarked byJuly 23, 2010
> Fiber Entry: Minimum 2 ounces alpaca prime blanket fiber shorn after
> Entry Fee: $25.00 (includes $6.00 AOBA recording fee) per 2 ounce sample entered. Add $75.00 non-member fee if not an AOBA Show System Member.
> Competition Limits: Only 3 samples per farm/owner/partnership, per breed type, per gender, per age division at time of shearing, per color designation.
> Awards: Ribbons for 1st through 6th place.
> Entries Displayed: results of judges' spinning and placing of entries will be on display at the New Jersey Alpaca Classic Show.

Class Divisions: Classes will be divided according to the number of entries
Classes to be divided into color groups: white, fawn, brown, black, grey, indefinite and multi, if possible. Class may be divided further into specific color designations (i.e. Light Fawn) with appropriate number of entries. Colors with less than four entries may be combined and judged by Light, Dark, Gray and Mixed, or by the age division. Final determination of class divisions and entry colors will be made by the spin-off show superintendent.
Entry Limitation: Entries are limited to 3 samples per farm/owner/partnership, per breed type, per gender, per age division at time of shearing, per
color designation. Example: You can enter a maximum of 3 Light Fawn Huacaya female entries in age class number SH-B per farm/owner/partnership.

Entry Includes: 1) Entry form, 2) minimum 2 ounces of prime blanket fiber(see more information below about fiber submitted), 3) completed Spin-
Off Entry Tag, 4) copy of
Fiber Shearing Dates: Fleece must have been shorn after
Submitted Fiber: 2 ounces of prime blanket fiber must be submitted in a clear, unmarked, gallon-size zipper type plastic bag with the completed
"AOBA Handcrafters’ Spin-Off Entry Tag" placed inside the bag with the fiber. NOTE: You need only send 2 ounces of fiber, there is no advantage to sending more than 2 ounces. Please do NOT write on the zip-lock bag. Fiber shall not be carded, combed, washed or otherwise enhanced; however, it should be handpicked of debris and vegetable matter. Fiber with vegetable matter, contamination or second cuts may be marked down accordingly.
Anonymity: Fiber will be judged by entry number only, with no identifying exhibitor information visible or available to the judge.
Fiber: parasitic infestation shall be disqualified. The reason for disqualification shall be recorded on the score card and the Judge’s Worksheet.
Huacaya: No maximum length under 1st Birthday, with a maximum of 8" for 1st Birthday and older.
Suri: No maximum under 2nd birthday, with a maximum of 9" for 2nd Birthday and older.
Judging Criteria: Scoring will be based on first impression, staple length, cleanliness, lack of second cuts, lack of guard hair, (lock structure in
suris), (crimp, staple or architecture in huacayas),uniformity, fineness, handle, luster (suris), brightness (huacayas), ease of preparation, ease of spinning, hand feel and softness of resulting yarn, plus loft in huacayas.
Disqualification: Fiber that is unsound, felted, contains tender breaks, mats, excessive debris will be discounted accordingly but will NOT be
disqualified. Points may be deducted for failure to submit at least 2 ounces of fiber or more then 4 ounces. However, fiber submitted and fiber samples exhibiting parasitic infestation or fiber exceeding the maximum lengths are to be disqualified. The reason for disqualification shall be recorded on the score card and the Judge’s Worksheet.
Entry Returns: You must include a one time $7.00 shipping fee to have your entries and awards shipped back to you following the 2010 New Jersey Classic Alpaca show. You, or a representative that you designate, may also pick up the fleece entries after Fiber Arts and Skein Competition Rules Fiber Arts and Skein Judge: TBD FIBER ARTS COMPETITION Fiber Arts Divisions: 1.a. Beginner: (working in the Fiber Art for less than two years). 1) Junior – ages 18 and younger 2) Adult – over age 18 1.b. Intermediate (working in that Fiber Art for more than two years). 1.c. Advanced (working in that Fiber Art for more than five years and/or has submitted to a juried event) Fiber Arts Categories: 2.a. All handwork - 100% handspun yarns with 100% handmade construction, and/or 100% hand-felted. 2.b.1. Part or non-handwork - Use of commercially spun yarn and/or knitting machine made construction, and/or 100% hand felted. 2.b.2.Partial or non-handwork - Less than 100% hand-felted. Fiber Arts Groups: 3.a. Woven 3.b. Felt 3.c. Knit 3.d. Crochet 3.e. Lace Fiber Arts Classes: 4.a.1. Accessories - Any Technique - Gloves, scarves, socks, and other small wearable items such as jewelry. 4.b. Shawls - Any Technique. 4.c. Hats - Any Technique. 4.d.1. Garments - Sweaters. 4.d.2. Garments - Vests. 4.e.1. Hearth & Home - Any Technique - Art and Toys (pictures, wall hangings, statues, etc.). 4.e.2. Hearth & Home - Any Technique - Home Furnishing (rugs, pillows, afghans, etc.). Rules: Fiber Arts Competition 1. All Entries, in all classes, must consist of 50% or more alpaca fiber. 2. All Fiber Arts items must be one-of-a kind items crafted by the exhibitor. 3. A maximum of 1 entry per division/category/group/class per exhibitor. 4. Items must have been completed between 5. Each item must be accompanied by written description that provides construction details. The construction description requires, but is not limited to the following information: fiber preparation, fiber content, techniques used, pattern designer, yarn used and intended use. This description will be included in the points for judging. Written description shall not exceed a 3" x 5" card and must NOT contain identifying information, including but not limited to alpaca name, individual name or ranch identifying information. NOTE: Description cards containing identifying information will be removed and NO points for written description will be awarded. 6. No substitutions at the show. 7. Judging Criteria: Items will be judged anonymously with points given for visual appeal, design, color, texture, craftsmanship, cleanliness, cohesiveness, consistency, tension, gauge/stitch size, correctness of finish, structural durability, selvedges/joins, correct needle size or correct sett, finishing, notions, blocking, final finishing, handle, creativity & innovation, construction description and intent. 8. Ribbons will be awarded in each division/category/group/class. 9. Classes may be combined if less than 4 entries per class are received. 10. The Judge or Fiber Arts Show Superintendent may change the category/class of an item at his/her discretion. 11. Entry Fees: $10 per item for Fiber Arts Entry. This fee includes. 12. (no mill-spun skeins) Skein Groups 1.a. Beginner spinner (spinning less than one year) 1.a.1) Junior – ages 18 and younger 1.a.2) Adult – over age 18 1.b. Intermediate spinner (spinning for more than one year) 1.c. Advanced spinner (spinning for more than three years) Skein Categories 2.a. Yarn Spun from commercially prepared fiber (roving, bats, tops, etc.). 2.b. Yarn spun from fiber hand prepared by the spinner. Skein Classes 3.a.1. Classic Yarn - Singles - 100% Huacaya (natural or dyed). 3.a.2. Classic Yarn - Singles - 100% Suri (natural or dyed). 3.a.3. Classic Yarn - 2 or more ply - 100% Huacaya (natural or dyed). 3.a.4. Classic Yarn - 2 or more ply - 100% Suri (natural or dyed). 3.a.5. Classic Yarn - 2 or more ply - Blends (at least 50% alpaca). 3.b. Hand Spindle - any ply (at least 50% alpaca) 3.c. Novelty Yarn - must be spun using a defined technique: Nap, Core, Spiral, Knot, Slub, Boucles, Beaded, etc. and comprised of at least 50% alpaca. Rules: Skein Competition 1. All Entries, in all classes, must consist of 50% or more alpaca fiber. 2. All Skeins must be crafted by the exhibitor. 3. A maximum of 2 entry per group/category/class per exhibitor, provided they are of different fiber preparations. 4. Items must have been completed between 5. Skeins must be at least 50 yards in length, 1 _ to 2 yds in circumference, neatly wound, “figure 8“ tied in 4 places and placed in a plain clear one gallon sized ziplock-style plastic bag. Points may be deducted for any skein that is not at least 50 yds in length. 6. Each item must be accompanied by written construction description. The construction description requires, but is not limited to the following information: fiber preparation, fiber content, techniques used and intended use of the yarn (i.e. clothing, rug, etc.). This description will be included in the points for judging. Written description shall not exceed a 3" x 5" card and must NOT contain identifying information, including but not limited to alpaca name, individual name or ranch identifying information. NOTE: Description cards containing identifying information will be removed and NO points for written description will be awarded. 7. No substitutions at the show. 8. Judging Criteria: • Items will be judged anonymously with points given for visual appeal, luster/brightness, cleanliness, color, skein appearance, handle, craftsmanship, cohesiveness, twist & execution, appropriate number of plies, diameter of yarn, structurally durable and consistent application of technique such as dyeing/blending, novelty, plying. • 1st - 3rd place Ribbons will be awarded in each group/category/class. • Classes may be combined if less than 4 entries per class are received. • The Judge may change the category/class of an item at his/her discretion. • Classic yarn classes may be further divided by thickness of yarn at the judge‘s discretion. 9.
