Basic Alpaca Husbandry (Care)

This seminar will consist of basic information for those new to, or just considering, the alpaca way of life. The basics of daily care and routine preventive maintenance will be presented including, feeding, shearing, toenail trimming, tooth care, immunizations, parasite control, and breeding. Shelter, pastures and fencing will also be discussed. This is meant to be an introductory presentation. There will a question and answer period at the end of the seminar.

Meet the Alpaca

This discussion is an opportunity to find out some basic information about these fascinating creatures. Topics covered include demographics and history, physical characteristics of alpacas. We will also discuss fiber characteristics and evaluation and what sets alpaca products apart from other natural fiber products. As always, there will plenty of time for questions!

Financial and Business Aspects of Alpaca Ownership

This seminar will cover the business side of record keeping and taxes. Estimated start up costs and financing of animals and equipment will be discussed. The need for accurate record keeping, hobby loss rule versus profit motive, business plans, tax aspects of buying and selling Alpacas will also be presented.

Dennis Tomsky is a self employed Enrolled Agent with an MBA in taxation and 35 years of experience with specialization in agricultural accounting and taxation. His business is based in Flemington, NJ.
